Just watching a tv programme about China and design and stuff. A girl said she wanted to promote new design. Now correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't every designer since before Leonardo da Vinci been influenced by what's gone before? So there can be no such thing as new design? Discuss!

  1. Every 'creative' new thing is always based on the ideas of others. What makes it new is if you take the ideas of others and build upon them to make something new, thus making it your own.

  2. That is the bvest6

  3. Look at fashion now it is the mid to late 70's all over again.  We go shopping and my Husband jokingly tells me the 70's are calling and want their clothes back.  Fashion runs in cycles.  We have seen the wedge heels that started out in the late 40's and early 50's then the late 70's and now they are back.  It looks like they run in 20 to 30 year cycles.

  4. oh but there is, they are constantly pushing the envelope.

  5. Wrong - there's always something new or things would not evolve. However in China, the land of no copyright, that's a rich statement! They will introduce a production line for anyone of exclusive products - the major fashion houses have all run into this problem - and when they have finished the production run for a client they will carry on making the product and selling it out of the back door - they don't have the same values we have in the West and this is why you can buy 'fakes' for silly prices but most of them are not fakes - they're just illegal in the West but they are the same production line product!

  6. I think she wants to promote the new designs from an awakening China. I may be wrong but I think her father was a multi-millionaire from Hong Kong, so she's using her Western Chinese background and wealth to introduce the developing China to the rest of the world which she's familiar with.

  7. is it not possible to recreate old designs using a modern tilt and using the latest fabrics that were nut available the first time round ?
