  1. get to your local bike shop. they can answer your questions without making you feel stupid! you're new to cycling, so they expect you to have questions.

  2. listen to the first guy, spend a little more and go to a bike shop. any walmart bike will end up needing lots of repairs that will end up up costing more than the bike. with a low end bike shop bike, you will get decent bike quality (still like 40 trillion times better than walmarts bikes) and great service for years to come!

  3. Try a hybrid. Think of a 10 speed mating with a mountain bike to have an offspring. It is the best off two worlds. You will sit up straighter. Try getting something like this:

  4. 26" is the size of the wheels. I would recommend going to a cycle shop and getting a low end bike. It will be better than what you get at walmart and you will appreciate that when you are riding it everyday. Look at something like a specialized hard rock or a giant boulder. both around $300.

  5. Try a bike like a flat bar road bike; it's got a more mountain style frame, but smaller tires than a mountain bike.  This means a more comfy riding position and tires with less rolling resistance.  Typically the tires are wider than a racing style bike too, so less flats.   Again, see if you can up your budget a bit and get something from a real bike shop.  It'll be lighter, put together properly, and made of components that won't break in a week.  For example, cheap bikes have plastic jockey wheels on the rear derailleur.  I would bet money that these break in about 20 miles of riding, whereas a cheap bike from a bike shop would have a metal wheel that will last for years and years.
