  1. Cats can vibrate the muscles so that they vibrate as air flows through the voice box.  In this way, when they breathe the air is flowing through and the purr sound happens.  Breathing actually is a part of the purr.

    I think they occasionally purr, and when they purr, they're exhaling.  

  5. Hi, great question but the answer gets pretty technical, here goes....

    Cats purring is unique, breathing in and out alternately tenses and relaxes the muscles of the voice box and diaphragm, creating pressure effects resulting in tubulent air flow through the trachea.  These cyclic and rapid pressure changes are superimposed on normal breathing and create the characteristic vibrations of purring, Purring is instinctual and they can do it from two days of age.

    A common misconception about purring is that it always indicates a state of pleasure but cats can purr when hungry, upset or in pain
