gee, doesn't ANYONE know how to do such simple research? And the fact that this question is asked and answered several times a week is a sad commentary.

anyway, "standard, simple" answer is 195. There are also several dependent areas, and disputed areas. But a good basic number is 195.

There are193 countries in the world, which is probably the best current answer to the question unless Taiwan becomes officially recognised by the international community, in which case the answer would be 194.
