  1. As mentioned they did build the Semi-Automatics, they don`t have a clutch pedal but are automatic shift.

It was quite an advanced thing to have on a car back in the `60s and `70s and is still quite unusual today.

However, they are quite strange to drive, but you will find better MPG and performance over a fully auto as you still have control of engine gearing and output.

I prefer a manual shift over the fully auto every time, but I can cope quite easily with the semi auto - in fact its quite a "quirky" idea and in a bug adds more character.

  2. They have an automatic transmission, but its a shiftable transmission without the clutch.  Its unlike anything you've ever driven probably.  Its not hard, but its still a stick with a shifting transmission.

  3. The only auto bugs were in fact semi-auto. That is you still had to shift gears only without a clutch.

They are quite a complicated set up and can be tricky to work on/maintain.

I don't think they (VW) ever built a fully automatic 70's bug!

    Sorry auto lovers!  :)

  4. yeah they did. It's called an Autostick. You really don't want one if you are not physically handicapped. They are harder to find in good working order, and even harder to find someone that knows how to repair/rebuild them. Go here for more info.
