Nuns usually live with other nuns in a communal building like a church or a school, they rely on the income of the building and share it out between them.

Most nuns living in community have taken the vow of poverty, and everything, including salaries they earn in schools and hospitals, is property of the community. They usually receive pocket money and can use cars and buildings owned by the community. In the old days the parents gave a "dowry" to the community when a nun took her vows.
