Justin Faulk full of potential according to Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford -NHL Update
At the age of just 20, Justin Faulk is already being compared to some hockey legends like Bobby Orr, Denis Potvin and Phil Housley. The best part of Carolina Hurricanes’ general manager, Jim Rutherford’s conversation over the weekend was that they were all offensive players and Faulk is a defender.
"We've had defensemen come into the League like [Bobby] Orr, [Denis] Potvin and [Phil] Housley, who were great offensive players, but I've never seen a player play so well defensively and offensively at his age," Rutherford said. "I can't describe it well enough to tell [fans] what they're in store for having this great young player."
After signing on to a three-year, entry-level deal worth $2.52 million prior to the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Regular Season, Faulk had a praiseworthy year as he picked up 22 points (8 goals, 14 assists) in 66 games played.
The biggest regret that the young defender had after having such a great opening season to his career was obviously that his team was not able to make the Stanley Cup playoffs, but eventually, he does believe that they will get there.
"When you don't make the playoffs, it's not a good feeling, it doesn't sit too well especially when you start seeing all the playoff stuff on TV and the Internet," Faulk said. "You're not too happy about it and I think we're hoping to be in a different position."
The native of South St. Paul, Minnesota, United States, was picked up by Carolina as the 37th overall draft pick back in 2010 after playing with the University of Minnesota and participating in the World Junior Championships with Team USA.
Training camp went great for the prospect of last year as he put up an impressive performance which had the team bound in giving him a chance during the regular season. As a defender, Justin Faulk also managed to record 29 minutes in penalty time and hopes to improve in every department heading into the new hockey year.
It will definitely be interesting to see Justin Faulk perform with Carolina Hurricanes when the time comes.
