Justin Rose: A strong contender in the upcoming major events – Golf News
Justin Rose, who has recently celebrated his first ever victory in the World Golf Championships – Cadillac Championship, now sights a major championship victory through the Masters Tournament.
The event is slated to take place at the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club, starting from Thursday, April 5, 2012.
Rose said that he was pleased to earn a victory in the WGC event, which also gave him a push on the Official World Golf Rankings, moving him to the seventh place.
In total, it was his fourth win on the PGA tour. He believes that he has yet to achieve his dream of winning the most prestigious title in the world of golf, any of the four major golf events.
"If you look at the tournaments I've won and now a World Golf Championship, the progression is really, really nice. The only thing that really is the next level up is a major," Rose said.
He added, "That's not to say that I'm at that stage in my career where I am only focusing on the majors. I think there is a lot more for me to do in the game to get to that point. But no doubt, I feel my game is getting ready for that".
Rose’ best finish in the major tournaments came in the 1998 British Open, when he tied for fourth on the leaderboard.
Apart from that, he also had fifth place finishes in the 2003 US Open and 2007 Masters. Since then, he has not been able to secure a top-five finish in any of the editions of the elite fields.
However, Rose believes that he is now in a position to challenge his opponents on the field and outclass them with the performance like he displayed at the Cadillac Championship.
Rose had a three-stroke deficit while entering the final round of the second WGC event of the year and carded a score of two-under par.
It was enough to beat the overnight leader, Bubba Watson, who faltered in the final round and scored a two-over par, slipping to the second position on the leaderboard.
Rose said that he remained consistent throughout the event, which became the major reason of his win, enabling him to defeat Watson, who did not capitalize his 56-hole lead on Sunday.
Therefore, repetition of a similar performance in the Masters Tournament, and in the other major events to come, will definitely earn him the first elite title of a major champion soon.
