Justin Rose and Tom Gillis lead after second round of Honda Open – Golf News
Justin Rose and Tom Gillis surged to the top position on the leaderboard after the second round of the Honda Classic, at the PGA National Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, finished on Friday, March 2, 2012.
Tom Gillis, who fired a round of six-under par 64, played an error-free round, carding six birdies in total that included two on the front nine and the other four on the back nine.
Each and every shot that he played was calculated and there was not even a single putt that seemed to miss the hole. His overall score to end the second round was eight-under par 132.
On the other hand, Rose also managed to make the same number of birdies as Gillis did.
However, his two consecutive bogeys on the sixth and seventh forced him to stay at four-under par 66 to share the lead with Gillis.
"You can't play 36 holes around here and expect to come away without any bruises at all," Rose said.
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy looks confident to take the number one position in Official World Golf Rankings with a win in the tournament.
He managed to record a score of three-under par 67 to finish one stroke behind the leaders. "I’d a few chances early on and didn't take them," McIlroy said.
He continued, "Kept making pars and making pars, and broke that run with a bogey on 13, which was frustrating. But to bounce back from that and birdie three of the last five holes was nice, and puts me in great position going into the weekend".
The most impressive performance that was witnessed on the second day of the event was of Brian Harman’s.
He carded a total of eight birdies, an eagle and a lone bogey to finish nine-under par course-record score.
“Just one of those crazy days where everything comes together,” Harman said. “Got off to a really hot start and just kept the pedal down all day. It was awesome”.
He finished in a three-way tie for the fifth, along with Vaughn Taylor and Jimmy Walker, who scored 66 and 67, respectively.
The overnight leader, Davis Love III, faltered in the second round, making two bogeys, and one double bogey against two birdies to finish two-over par 72. It cost him to end in a seven-way tie for the 11th.
