Justin Rose ends Australian Open tied at fourth
Justin Rose had been a promise this Australian Open. Promise unfulfilled by the looks of it.
Peter Senior, on Sunday, became the oldest person to win the Open at The Lakes, shooting for an unbelievably cockeyed 4-under 284!
The Sydney play has been described by audiences and organizers alike as the most challenging game of the tournament they may have had witnessed to date.
All four players of the top tier ended the final round within strokes of one another, despite fierce weather conditions and punishing gale-force winds.
Play had been suspended for a full three hours because the day had begun to darken and the strong winds would not allow long-drives down the drawn out fairways.
What should be championed about Australian golf, and the Australian Open in particular, was that the weather was not able to weather the most potent of players from carding brilliant scores.
Peter Senior ended the day lifting the Stonehaven trophy with a dazzling 4-under 284. Countryman Brendan Jones followed that just short a stroke, with Cameron Percy finishing third.
Justin Rose tallied in at the fourth place, which also saw him tied with Kim Felton and Kieran Pratt.
For Rose, the day began respectably, even-paring the first two holes. It was the bogeys on holes three and four that cemented him in the fourth place.
Birdies on 11 and 13 did not make much of a difference. Par-4 hole sixteen produced a bogey, as did the final hole of the day that culminated with a total of 287. That was the end of him.
The South African-born English player had been a favourite in the tournament. The only other big name to make an appearance was Adam Scott. Both players, however, did not quite perform the way expectant fans had been hoping for.
To Rose’s professional golfing career, 2012 has been a complete slump even in its waning days, despite him being the runner-up in DP World Tour Championship this year.
He finished second to Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy. That performance brought with it a world ranking of 4 for the first time in his career. It had been completely downhill from there.
