Justin Rose lauds Ian Poulter’s quintessential record ahead of the Volvo World Match Play Championship
Justin Rose will be one of the notable Englishmen in this week’s Volvo World Golf Championship scheduled to start at the scenic Finca Cortesin in Spain and will be paired with the formidable duo of Robert Rock and Open Champion Darren Clarke.
Regardless of his pairings, Rose has a keen eye on the countryman Ian Poulter and considers him one of the most likely players in the field who will successfully retain the cup he won last year.
Rose won the WGC-Cadillac Championship earlier this year and boosts of splendid form heading into the knock-out format of the event.
He said, “I think he's a great putter. He seems to make clutch putts. In a 72 hole tournament, there's only clutch putting coming down the back nine on Sunday. But in match play, you can have a putt for a halve, and the whole round is a little bit more that way. You're making putts to halve, you're making putts to win holes. I think he's very good at that”.
Rose has substantial evidence to back up his comments about his countryman who has posted a remarkable record in the Match Play format.
In fact, it would not go without saying that many of the English players on the European Tour have a knack for the unpredictable format which includes the likes of Luke Donald and Rose himself.
Rose also lauded Poulter’s record in the Ryder Cup as well as the Match Play Championships and hailed him as the best Match Play player available on the tour.
He added, “His Ryder Cup record is amazing, and he's won both world match play championships. There is an art to it, I guess”.
Poulter has a done well since the start of the season posting several strong finishes including an outright seventh at this year’s Masters at Augusta National.
Winner of 15 professional events, Poulter also won the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in 2010 and has come close of winning other Match Play titles in his stellar career.
Meanwhile, Rose is contemplating a strong finish if not a victory at Finca Cortesin and is hoping to make it into the Ryder Cup scheduled at Medinah Country Club in October this year.
