Justin Rose secures his maiden major at the US Open – Golf News
Justin Rose passed the Merion test as he came out of the field of the US Open as the victor, after carding an amazing even-par 70 in the final round, on Sunday, June 16, 2013.
The second major golf championship was a high-scoring event this season, as Rose was the only player in the field to finish the tournament with an even par overall score.
Entering the final round, he was trailing Phil Mickelson by just one stroke. Standing at the first tee, he certainly knew that he did not have to surpass Mickelson’s score. In fact, he had to survive the difficult playing conditions
at the Merion Golf Club, which he did to secure his maiden major title victory.
He carded three birdies against two bogeys on the front nine of the course to reach the turn in one-under. The back nine of the course witnessed him conceding three bogeys while adding another two shots to his scorecard, to finish
two strokes ahead of Jason Day and Mickelson.
Talking to the reporters after winning the event, he expressed his excitement in joining the winning circle of the major champions, and said that he was missing his dad while contending in the tournament – the world celebrated
Father’s Day on Sunday.
"What a day," an emotional Rose said. "I don't know what to say, I'm thrilled. I just kept telling myself that (making bogeys) is what everyone is doing. You saw me look to the heavens with it being Father's Day - I was just trying
to remember my dad."
Talking about the venue course, he said that his arrival at Merion one week before the start of the event allowed him to learn more about the playing conditions.
“I came here Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, almost two weeks ago now. I saw the place without anybody out here. I think that was a big part of my week, to fall in love with a girl named Merion, I just didn't know her last name.”
Mickelson, in the meantime, faltered for a four-over par 74 and was disappointed on his poor performance in the final round.
