Justin Rose steady, whereas Jim Furyk stumbles – PGA Tour Championship
Things could not have turned out better for the South African born English golfer, Justin Rose, who is a joint leader after 54-holes at East Lake. Three very good rounds by Rose mean that he has a shot at his first FedEx Cup title.
A positive sign for Rose on Saturday was that he shot a flawless round, although only two birdies were scored. Olazabal will be a happy man seeing this performance from the Englishman.
Rose has an outside chance to lift the FedEx Cup if he wins the Tour Championship at East Lake. As Rose is not among the top 5, in terms of FedEx standings, a victory and some other favourable finishes are required for the Englishman to lift the trophy.
“I have the advantage of just playing the Tour Championship,” said Rose, who won a World Golf Championship event at Doral in March.
He continued, “The whole year, we’ve been grinding for the FedEx Cup, and it’s still possible. It’s not an easy golf course. Things can happen out there. But for me, it’s about one tournament”.
If Justin is to win on Sunday, he must fire a flawless round with more birdies. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods, world number one Rory McIlroy and all others will also give a shot at the title.
Jim Furyk did not have the best of days in the field on Saturday but he is still in contention, thanks to his brilliant birdie spree in the second round.
The veteran was going on nicely and was all set for a one-under finish until the 17th hole, where he triple bogeyed.
The American closed the day with a two-over par score, taking his tournament score to five-under. He is only three shots behind the leaders and another low round on Sunday would surely make things interesting.
At five-under, Furyk is joined by two other Ryder Cuppers, Bubba Watson and Rory McIlroy. Furyk is the only American in the Ryder Cup team who has not won a tournament this year.
A victory at the Tour Championship would do considerable good for him. It will also raise the morale of the whole team.
