Justin Smoak’s homer helps Seattle Mariners defeat Baltimore Orioles 3-2 – MLB Update
Justin Smoak struck a brilliant homer in the eighth inning to take the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 victory over Baltimore Orioles at Safeco Field, Seattle on Tuesday, May 31.
"Some at-bats feel good, some don't," Justin Smoak said after hitting the game decisive homer. As if what it did not satiate his hunger for doing more, Smoak said, "I'm still working to try and get that rhythm and timing from both sides of the plate. It's
a work in progress."
While Smoak scored in the crucial eighth inning, when the team was going down 2-0, Ryan had his share of hits. "It's Safeco Field for one thing. I'm not going to hit a homer anyway. That's the last thing in my mind," Ryan said. "I'm really trying to get
on base any way I can."
However, if Smoak was the luckiest to walk on the field on Tuesday, Jeremy Guthrie seemed the most unlucky. Pitching solidly right into the seventh inning, allowing no runs, he was subject to a massive hit in the eighth inning by none other than Smoak. Guthrie
pitched brilliantly for most of the game, only to lose it in the end
Tuesday’s game, in all probability, was one that seemed to have predictably seen the dominance of the pitchers. Erik Bedard initiated the game with pitching for Seattle. He was pretty economical with pitching, disallowing the Orioles to score.
Guthrie was, beyond any shadow of a doubt, remained unyielding as far as Tuesday’s game was concerned. Not even for a fraction of second did it seem that the starting pitcher would allow anyone to play effectively against him. His strategy and his pitching
seemed a fairly successful combination.
While the velocity of his pitching was rising, Nick Markakis scored the first run for the Orioles in the sixth inning. Matt Wieters scored the second run for the Orioles in the seventh inning and gave an important 2-0 lead to his team.
Jeremy, who maintained his ascendancy till the seventh inning failed to contain Smoak in the eighth inning as the Mariners’ hitter struck an impressive hit, earning a three-run homer to give a decisive 3-2 lead to his team.
Brandon League threw a strong ninth inning for the Seattle Mariners to keep the 3-2 lead intact and turn it into a decisive victory.
