Justin Smoak’s three run homer helps Seattle Mariners defeat Oakland Athletics 4-2 – MLB Update
The Seattle Mariners were thrilled on Monday, September 26 to kick off their last series of the season with a win over the Oakland Athletics 4-2 at Safeco Field in Seattle.
Miguel Olivo equalised for the team while Justin Smoak led home three runs to put the home team over the A’s. Seattle’s manager Eric Wedge was also impressed by Jason Vargas who reached his tenth win in style.
Vargas went over eight innings in pitching. The starter was on 9-13 before the game and there was a need to quell rumours of a long slump in the Major League. The hurler was up to his best as he took out the A’s in stunning fashion. The ace ball thrower
managed to strike-out ten hitters in the game before he got the call back to the dugout. He allowed just one run off five hits.
His replacement, Brandon League was not as impressive as the starter. He gave up a run in the ninth off two hits. The A’s had Brandon McCarthy on for the bout. He too was impressive but the home-runs that he allowed made all the difference as he walked out
of the game with four runs conceded from eight hits. The starter was supposed to be the better pick for the analysts but Smoak proved that there is a good feeling about Seattle’s reformed line-up.
McCarthy was the only man in the bout for the A’s as he went into eight innings before the game ended subsequently. The hurler was also looking for his tenth win but the loss means he ends his season on 9-9.
The A’s had the early advantage in the game as Jemile Weeks continues to pump hot air into the Oakland attack. The second baseman has been ever present on the bases since he smashed his first homer of the season against Colby Lewis of the Texas Rangers,
last week.
The infielder scored the first run of the game when Hideki Matsui forced a single to left centre-field. The play allowed Oakland to go 1-0 up in the first inning. Mariners were not able to respond till the fifth inning as catcher Miguel Olivo made his manager
proud when he smashed a solo home-run to left.
The catcher was later joined by three other Mariners’ stars. Smoak smashed a powerful three-run homer to the right, allowing Dustin Ackley and Mike Carp to run home, safe. The A’s were unable to tackle Vargas as Josh Willingham ground out in the ninth against
Brandon League to allow Coco Crisp a run home. The game ended 4-2, in favour of the Mariners.
