Justin Upton’s double RBIs help Arizona Diamondbacks defeat St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 – MLB Update
Arizona Diamondbacks’ right-fielder, Justin Upton was impressive with the bat as he went 1-for-4 with an average of .295 and hit two RBIs in the Diamondbacks’ 4-1 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on July 7.
In the first inning, Stephen Drew singled to left-field but Ryan Roberts flied out towards centre-field and Upton grounded out to short-stop position. The Cardinals’ batters also failed to post runs when David Freese walked but Albert Pujols flied out to
right-field and Matt Holliday hit a grounder and got out at second base.
The Diamondbacks’ batters posted one run during the second inning and got a 1-0 lead when Sean Burroughs hit a sacrifice fly off centre-field and Chris Young added a single run. The pitchers did not give away any run from third to fifth inning and got out
batters on their tricky pitches.
Joe Saunders pitched beautifully for the Diamondbacks as he threw five score-less innings with an ERA of 3.86 and gifted just one hit to the Cardinals’ batters. Saunders had four strike-outs on his 78 pitches. At the bottom of the fifth inning, Yadier Molina
was lined out to second base and Nick Punto grounded out towards second base.
Saunders said, “I made some good pitches against some good hitters. And the defence was awesome. They turned in some big double plays. It was my first career rain delay and it was probably better to err on the side of caution.”
In the sixth inning, the Diamondbacks’ offence extended their lead by scoring two runs while the Cardinals got off the mark with one run to cut their deficit 3-1. Upton struck a two-run homer (405 feet) towards left-centre and Roberts posted a single run.
On the other side, Holliday doubled off left-field and Freese added the first and last run for the Cardinals. Pujols moved to third base at the end of the sixth inning.
The Diamondbacks took a 4-1 lead during the seventh inning when Roberts drove a single-run shot towards left-field and Gerardo Parra posted the final run of the game. The last two innings were extravagant for the batters as they did not contribute even a
single run.
With this impressive win, the Diamondbacks were able to take a 1-0 lead against the Cardinals in a four-game series at St. Louis.
