Justin Verlander's pitching helps Detroit Tigers rout New York Mets, 5-2: MLB Update
Detroit Tigers’ starter, Justin Verlander, was remarkable with the ball as he pitched seven innings with an ERA of 2.32 and had six strike-outs in the Tigers’ 5-2 victory against the New York Mets at Comerica Park, Detroit, on June 30.
Despite the frustrating loss, the Mets took a three-game series, 2-1.
The Mets’ short-stop, Jose Reyes, doubled to right-field, but Carlos Beltran was struck-out swinging at the top of the first. Similarly, Don Kelly popped out to short-stop and Andy Dirks fouled out towards the first base.
Daniel Murphy gave the Mets an initial run by hitting a solo homer (359 feet) towards right-field at the top of the second, while Jhonny Peralta scored one run on the drive of Austin Jackson to right-centre. The game levelled 1-1 at the end of second inning.
During the third inning, the Tigers exploded three runs and got a 4-1 lead. Alex Avila hit a sacrifice-fly towards the left-field and Victor Martinez posted a single run. The last two runs were taken by Peralta and Dirks, when Ramon Santiago took a single
to the centre-field. In the fourth inning, the pitchers did not allow any run to the batters by tossing fast-balls.
Verlander gave away just one run on seven hits with one earned run and he allowed two walks on 120 pitches. Verlander expressed his excitement as, “Each day is a new day in baseball, and that's the beautiful thing about this. They go out and score however
many runs in two days with a bunch of hits, but you turn the page.”
Dirks commented on Verlander and said, “The way he's pitching right now, it's unbelievable. We just try to play good defence behind him and put up some runs and win the ballgame.”
The Tigers’ batters added one run in the fifth inning to get a 5-1 lead, when Dirks hit a one-run homer (390 feet) to the right-field. During the sixth and seventh inning, the batters got out on their slothful shots as Ruben Tejada was grounded out to short-stop
and Josh Thole flied out to the left-field at the top of the seventh inning.
In the eighth inning, the Mets contributed only one run as Beltran homered (364 feet) towards the right-field to cut his team’s deficit 5-2. Ninth inning of the game went without any run as Lucas Duda was flown out to the centre-field and Fernando Martinez
struck-out swinging.
