Justin Verlander helps Detroit Tigers humiliate New York Yankees 7-2 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers used their home conditions superbly against the New York Yankees as they cruised to a 7-2 win at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Monday, August 6 in the opening game of a four match series.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Justin Verlander made an impressive bounce back appearance to improve to 12-7.
"Felt pretty good," Verlander said with a smile on his face.
"Hopefully your ace is an ace," Manager Jim Leyland said in an interview.
The reigning MVP, Verlander gave up just two runs and struck-out a season high 14 batters in eight effective innings, creating all sort of problems for Yankees’ offense. Heading off to the dugout, he raised his arm to acknowledge standing ovation from the
local crowd.
"He said, 'Then let's get this last batter and we'll see what happens,'" Verlander recalled Leyland saying.
"In the eighth inning, he still had a 100 mph fastball," said Suzuki, who was fanned three times. "The rest of his pitches are great, too."
"Did you see some of those pitches?" Detroit catcher Alex Avila asked. "That last curveball, I don't think anybody could've hit it. I had enough trouble catching it."
Tigers looked to dominate New York right from the start of the contest. 2012 Home Run Derby winner Prince Fielder provided his side with a dream start as he connected for a solo home-run to right centre in the second inning to put Tigers on the board.
Third baseman, Miguel Cabrera, who has looked in commanding form after the All Star Break, also made his presence felt with a home-run to centre in the fourth as the Tigers doubled their lead to 2-0.
Derek Jeter responded for the Yankees with an RBI single to right and Robinson Cano singled to left in the fifth inning to level score but the Tigers were determined to beat the Yankees.
Omar Infante earned an RBI single and Austin Jackson singled to centre in the fifth to give Tigers the momentum. Andy Dirks and Alex Avila also made useful contributions in the fifth and the sixth, giving their team complete control of the situation.
