Justin Verlander improves to 7-4 as Detroit Tigers beat St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 – MLB Update
Justin Verlander produced another masterful performance as Detroit Tigers dominated St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday, June 19 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball.
The 2011 MVP and Cy Young Award winner, Verlander showed great control and accuracy over his fastballs and the curveballs, improving his record to 7-4.
Although Verlander struck out only three hitters, he displayed some top quality throwing skills, allowing just one un-earned runs and five hits in seven solid innings to lead his side to a much needed victory.
It was for the 57th straight time, Verlander pitched at least six innings and it will be interesting to see if he can come up with similar results throughout this season to match his numbers from last season.
"The mindset is: OK, turn the page," Verlander said. "Pick up my teammate."
"I was trying to be economical," Verlander said. "My guys gave me a four-, five-run lead, I'm not trying to go out there and strike out anybody."
St. Louis’ starting pitcher Lance Lynn took his third loss of the season after he gave up five runs and nine hits in just five innings.
Delmon Young had a decent time on the plate as he singled to left in the first inning to put the Tigers 1-0 ahead. Austin Jackson, who has returned from the DH list, also made his presence felt with an RBI double to deep right in the second to extend his
side’s lead to 3-0.
Outfielder Quintin may be inexperienced at the highest level but he has already shown glimpses of his immense talent. In a game against Colorado Rockies last week, he went 5-for-5 to become only the fourth hitter to achieve such a feat in 12 years history
of Comerica Park.
Berry grounded out to second and Young singled to right in the fifth to give the Tigers complete control of the situation.
Third baseman Miguel Cabrera finally managed to give his fans something to cheer about as he singled to right in the sixth inning to take the lead beyond Cardinals’ reach.
