Justin Verlander is ready for Spring Training – MLB News
Detroit Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander is focusing on his throwing these days. According to sources, Verlander has been practicing at the Tigers’ training facility for the last few days. On a bright and sunny morning, the 2011 Most Valuable Player of American
League loosened up and spent some time with himself.
He then turned to throw the ball to first base where Tigers’ new pitching coach Kenny Rogers awaited. The throw was a bit off target and Kenny had to get down gloving it. The coach then said something to the pitcher and both started to laugh.
Verlander also helped several other young pitchers, who were throwing on side by side mounds. Although he has already achieved great heights is his career, the starter was the last one to leave the practice session.
"I tell you what, I think our defence is pretty good," Leyland said Thursday, his voice going faster than usual, as it often does when he sticks up for his team. "I think we'll catch what we're supposed to, and I think we'll throw it accurately. And I think
there's a lot to be said for that. I think we're better defensively than what people think."
"We have a responsibility to Mr. Ilitch," Leyland said Thursday, referring toward owner Mike Ilitch. "Let's face it, he puts it up. And he expects results. And that's a good thing. He should."
Making the most of available opportunities, Verlander helped the Tigers win the American League Central title last season. His 24-5 win-loss record with a sensational ERA also won him Pitching Triple Crown award, which is a rare feat for a modern day pitcher.
In addition to his throwing skills, Verlander has the ability to handle the fame and pressure. He concentrates on his game play and he is a great team mate to have.
The Tigers have spent their money lavishly this offseason to form one of the strongest team in Major League Baseball history. With Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera, Verlander and Drew Smiley on the roster, owner Mike Ilitch will not be looking to settle for
anything less than a World Series title.
