Justin Verlander named Newsmaker of the Year – MLB Detroit Tigers News
According to a leading sports website, Detroit Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander has been named as the 2011 News Maker of the Year by WXYZ-TV. Verlander displayed some high quality pitching skills last season to help the Tigers win the American League Central title.
Reaching 1000 strike-outs during the season, he became only the 15th player from the Tigers to achieve such a feat. He also became the only pitcher in the American League to win the Triple Crown of pitching award. With 24 wins, 250 strike-outs and an incredible 2.40 ERA, he looked in commanding form in 2011. Following his consistent performances, he was also selected for the All-Star team.
Verlander is expected to appear on channel 7’s weekly information program on February 5 at 9:30 am. The host of the program will be Check Stokes, who is the WXYZ Editorial Director. Verlander was interviewed in depth by the program host. Talking about his family and his personal life, he seemed to be having a lot of fun with the host. He further talked about his role models and his pitching style.
The right handed flame thrower added that his life has changed completely since his record breaking MLB season. Verlander made his Major League Debut in 2005. However, it wasn’t until 2011 when he fully realised his immense potential.
Chuck Stokes stated in an interview that Verlander is a very dedicated sports person. He explained that the starter brought the region together with his match winning performance last season.
"In a year when political and economic stories were so critical in metro Detroit, focusing on a hero in the sporting world was a welcome change," said WXYZ Editorial Director Chuck Stokes. "Verlander captured our attention and really brought the region together like no one else did in 2011. Whenever Verlander pitched, people from all walks of life bought tickets and packed Comerica Park."
Verlander is very famous among the Tigers' fans and people from all walks of life bought tickets to watch him at the Comerica Park. He is a tremendous player deserving of all of the awards as he gets ready for the upcoming 2012 MLB regular season.
