Justin Verlander sparks as Detroit Tigers defeat Colorado Rockies 9-1 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers’ starter, Justin Verlander had a notable day with the ball as he threw nine innings with an ERA of 2.54 and struck-out five batters in the Tigers’ 9-1 win over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, Colorado on June 19.
In the first inning, the pitchers controlled the batters by pitching in perfect line and the score-board remained empty. The Tigers scored their first run in the second inning and took a 1-0 lead when Alex Avila added one run on the single-run shot of Ryan
Raburn towards right-field.
The Tigers extended their lead 3-0 in the third inning. Avila hit a sacrifice fly off left-field and Brennan Boesch scored a single run. Miguel Cabrera posted the second run when Andy Dirks singled towards centre-field.
Fourth inning also went in support of the Tigers’ batters as they posted one run to take their lead 4-0. Don Kelly tripled to deep right-field and Austin Jackson contributed one run for the Tigers. On the other side, the Rockies opened their scoring account
in the fifth inning and reduced their lead 4-1.
Ty Wigginton hit a one-run homer (424 feet) towards left-field to lift the potential of the Rockies. The batters failed to put any run during the sixth inning as the pitchers threw the ball in perfect line.
Verlander was on top in entire game as he permitted just one run on four hits with one earned run. He did not give any walk on his 110 pitches. Speaking to reporters, Verlander said, “This start wasn't that great. Early in the game especially, my fastball
control wasn't anywhere near where it should be. But I was able to keep guys off balance.”
In the seventh inning, the Tigers blasted three runs and led off with 7-1. Kelly, Boesch and Cabrera each added three runs collectively for the Tigers. Eighth inning passed without any contribution of the batters.
The Tigers’ manager, Jim Leyland commented on Verlander and said, “When Justin's pitching I think you get a little bit of a lift automatically. The guys take the field with a little bit of pizazz. He's earned that.”
During the ninth inning, the Tigers got a 9-1 lead when Boesch homered (422 feet) towards centre-field and Cabrera struck a solo homer (394 feet) to right-field.
