Justin Verlander sparks as Detroit Tigers defeat Minnesota Twins 6-2 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers’ starter, Justin Verlander had a notable day with his pitching as he struck-out nine batters in eight inning pitches and gave the Tigers a 6-2 win over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, Minnesota on July 21.
At the top of the first inning, Austin Jackson was grounded out to short-stop position, Brennan Boesch flied out to right-field and Magglio Ordonez fouled out to first inning without giving any run to the Tigers. Similarly, the Twins’ batters were also grounded
out towards different bases and short-stop at the bottom of the first inning.
During the second and third inning, the batters again failed to hit the ball properly and were struck-out on the tricky throws of the pitchers. The Tigers posted their first run in the fourth inning and took a 1-0 lead when Boesch added one run on the single-run
shot of Jhonny Peralta towards right-field.
The Tigers got a 3-0 lead during the fifth inning when Boesch struck a two-run homer (421 feet) towards right-centre and Wilson Betemit contributed a single run. At the top of the sixth inning, the Tigers’ batters again scored two runs to raise the momentum
of their team but the Twins got their first run at the bottom of the sixth inning to reduce their lead 5-1.
Peralta doubled to left-field and Miguel Cabrera scored a single run. The second run for the Tigers during the sixth inning was taken by Victor Martinez when Carlos Guillen hit a sacrifice fly towards left-field. On the other hand, Michael Cuddyer singled
to deep right-field and Alexi Casilla posted the first run for the Twins.
The pitchers did not permit any run during the seventh inning. Verlander pitched his respective innings with an ERA of 2.24 and allowed just one run on five hits. He gave up only one earned run on his 126 pitches.
In the eighth inning, Peralta struck a solo homer (362 feet) towards left-field to give the Tigers a 6-1 lead. The Twins were able to post just one run during the ninth inning to reduce their lead 6-2. Danny Valencia reached towards third base on an infield
single and Jason Repko added the last run for the Twins.
After a hard-fought win, the Tigers led off the four-game series 1-0 at Target Field.
