Justin Verlander’s 10 strike-outs help Detroit Tigers rout Cleveland Indians 4-3 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers’ starter, Justin Verlander showed an exclusive performance with the ball as he pitched seven innings and struck out 10 batters to give the Tigers a 4-3 win against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field, Cleveland on August 11.
Tigers’ started pretty well as they took one run during first inning and led off with 1-0. Magglio Ordonez hit a sacrifice fly to right-field and Austin Jackson added a single run. At the top of second inning, Tigers smashed three runs to raise their lead
while the Indians were able to score only one run and cut their deficit 4-1 at the bottom of second inning.
Alex Avila drove a single-run shot towards left-centre field and Jhonny Peralta scored one run. Carlos Guillen posted his first run when Wilson Betemit singled to shallow right-field. Tigers’ third run during second inning was taken by Avila when Jackson
bunted a sacrifice fly towards pitcher and Betemit occupied second base quickly.
Carlos Santana hit a solo homer (405 feet) towards right-centre to add the first run for Indians in second inning. Indians’ batters contributed two runs during third inning to reduce their lead 4-3. Lou Marson and Jason Kipnis both scored two collective
runs for Indians when Asdrubal Cabrera hit a double-run shot to deep right-field.
The rest of the six innings were score-less for both teams as the batters played slothful shots and were struck-out. In fifth inning, Lonnie Chisenhall singled off left-field but Kipnis and Ezequiel Carrera both struck-out swinging. Later on, at second base
Chisenhall got out without contributing any run to Indians’ score-card.
Verlander said, “It's exciting to get there, but in the big scheme of things it doesn't mean all that much. It's not like 100 wins was ever a goal. There's other things going on here with this team. Obviously, this win was special because of the other circumstances
surrounding it.”
During ninth inning, Tigers were unable to increase their lead by missing some scoring opportunities when Betemit drove a single-run shot to left-field but at centre-field, Guillen flied out and Avila grounded out. Verlander threw his respective innings
with an ERA of 2.35 and permitted three hits, three runs, three walks and three earned runs on his 108 pitches.
Despite a hard-fought win, Tigers lost the three-game series 2-1 played at Progressive Field.
