Juventus, Liverpool agree on Poulsen’s transfer fee
Liverpool has finally got Christian Poulsen in their squad. Alas, Juventus and Liverpool agreed on a transfer fee figure of around 5 million pounds, depending on the amount of appearances that the Danish midfielder makes for the five-time European champions.
Liverpool had been chasing the defensive midfielder since the start of the summer transfer window as their own midfield star Javier Mascherano looks to be on his way out of Anfield. The Merseyside giants have seen some troubled times recently, as they finished seventh in the latest English Premier League season. In doing so, Liverpool failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League which not only means that they will suffer financial losses but it also might encourage present players at the club to jump ship to greener pastures.
Fans at Liverpool have also formed their own opinions about the current situation at the club and most of them blame the present American owners for the hard times that have fallen upon the great club. However, recent news is that a Chinese business firm might be interested in buying the club which has raised hopes at the Merseyside.
Liverpool also parted ways with their long standing manager Rafael Benitez, who had been at the club since the 2004/2005 season. With Benitez in control at the club, Liverpool’s best finish in the English Premier League was as runners up spot to their rivals Manchester United in the 2008/2009 season. The Spanish tactician did win the UEFA Champions League as well as the F.A Cup during his time at the club as well.
Most of Benitez’s time at Liverpool was spent competing against Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United and Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea. Despite the manager’s efforts, Liverpool was unable to break Chelsea and Manchester United’s monopoly in the English Premier League. The Reds recently appointed Roy Hodgson as their new manager who has already brought in Joe Cole to strengthen the squad at Liverpool.
Joe Cole’s arrival has been complimented by the signing of Milan Jovanovic. The club’s most important players such as Torres and Gerrard have also committed their future to Liverpool so the last two weeks have been quite bright for Liverpool fans. In latest news, Juventus announced on their website that Christian Poulsen is Liverpool bound for sure. Poulsen is thirty years old right now and has played under Roy Hodgson during his time with F.C. Copenhagen in 2000. However, his arrival might signal the end of Mascherano’s career at Liverpool, who has been actively showing his interest in a move away from Liverpool to Inter Milan.
The Argentinean midfielder asked Roy Hodgson for a transfer away from Liverpool on his first day back at the club from the extended break following the World Cup. Up till now, Inter Milan has not yet Liverpool’s evaluation of the Argentinean captain but an agreement is soon expected between the two European giants. Other clubs in the transfer market like Barcelona are keen on signing the 26-year-old midfielder, after the Catalonian club failed to sign Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas.
Mascherano expressed his thoughts after Argentina’s one nil win over Republic of Ireland by saying that he has got nothing against Liverpool fans or the people in the English city. Javier said that he feels proud when he plays for Liverpool but also added that a change in the country is required for his life to go on. Mascherano captained his national team for their match against Argentina.
In an interview after the end of the match, he also thanked the people in Liverpool and everyone who supported him in the red shirt since the start of his career with the former English league champions. It is quite possible that Mascherano’s eventual destination will be Inter Milan, as Rafael Benitez, Liverpool’s former manager is now in-charge at the Italian champions.
