Juwel Rio 125 tropical fish tank - HELP PLEASE?

Hi,

Just wondering if anybody else has one of these tanks - Juwel Rio 125 with the Juwel internal compact filter system.

I have had mine set up since approx march 2008 and the pump has recently stopped working - the fuse is ok but it has just packed up all together, no gunk on impellor etc. Wondered if anybody else has had probs with the Juwel pump at all.

Also i dont think that the filter system seams adeqaute as the water never looks clean. I have been doing partial water changes and even treated the tank for white spot and parasites etc just in case this was the cause for the water looking how it does.

My tank is not overstocked as i only have the following fish:

2 corydoras,

1 neon tetra

1 wcmm

4 pristella tetras

1 bristle nose (not at full size - only 2 inches long"

3 royal Rams

Could anybody please help with feedback/your views on this.

Thanks

  1. ok i have a 350 gallon jewel tank with a internal filter system but i also have an external 305 fluval filter system working with the tank too i havent had problems with mine it says to clean out the sponges every 6 months completly but i dont i clean mine out 2-3 weeks and not had problems trouble with internal filters for jewels is any chemicals that get put into the water goes through the filter too i also use a filter aid made by inter-pet it makes the water go crystal clear and use this everytime i clean the filter and sponges out it could actually be that the motor on the filter has died which it would be best for you just to get an external filter fluval 205 for your tank which you will notice the difference within days hope this helps u out

  2. i have the rio 400,had it just over 2years.i replaced the pump due to it just stopping.you could contact juwel on the web, they are really helpful when it comes to replacements/parts.as for the water, you could try the juwel poly-pads.you dont need to use the carbon pads, that come with the setup, unless you have used medications in the tank.

  3. when you clean your filter, you may find that when you take sponge filters out, there may be a second set underneath.your pump may need replacing.try taping it, might be something silly hope this helps

  4. the jewel pumps are c**p they break really easy but they do come with a years manufacturers warrenty so go back to the shop you bought it from and they should give you a new one

  5. Agree with the sponges being blocked theory, so I go along with stripping it down and cleaning everything.

You are long way from overstocked which makes me think you are over feeding, which is the cause of the dirty water and the filter packing in.

  6. I had the same problem last month, I have a Juwel 180L. The "pump" stopped sending water out. It wasn't the impeller that was gunked up (this had happened before) it was the filter sponges inside the internal filter system.

I initially cleaned them all in a big bowl of aquarium water, not tap water as it kills the bacteria. You are supposed to clean/change them every few weeks and I had been doing this but somehow the algae/bacteria had gone mad and the sponges were all gooey and yuk. I think my heater thermostat is on the way out so maybe the water was a little warm (27 degrees) usually I run it at about 24 degrees.

I replaced 1 fine and 1 coarse filter as soon as I could and one week later I did the same with the other 2 filters. You aren't supposed to change them all at once as the good bacteria will all be lost.

Hope this helps. I was panicking, all my fish were gasping on the top through lack of oxygen when I got up one morning and 2 died :(

  7. i have a juwel vision 450 and so far have no problems with the internal filter but i also have an external filter incase anything goes wrong with the internal one

  8. i set mine up in april 2008 and my pump has stopped working after water changes where i turned it off. I do admittidly hit the pump and it starts working again but that may not be he case for you. I also had this with a rekord 60 pump, i contacted juwel and they sent me a confirmation email to send back the pump (with the email as proof) to the shop i bought it from and get a refund. They were very helpful and replied to me within 2 days. So thats the route i would take, contacting. I do agree with the above aswell, take out of the the sponges and give them a rinse in old aquarium water so the beneficial bacteria doesnt die off.

    good luck

  9. I had the same problem with the 125 litrein the end I purchase a fluval 3+ filter and my tank has never been so clear and clean. My clown loaches love the filter now I have taken the sponges out, remember if you do get another filter block the hole up and take sponges out. I left them in for a while to let the new filter take over then removed them.Good Luck :)
