I have a JVC GR-D370U, and I just purchased a fire wire cable to fit the DV slot on the camera. I also have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and the other end of the fire wire fits into my USB. When I go and plug both in and turn my camera on into playback mode so I can upload the video into Windows Movie Maker it says "USB Device Not Recognized". How do I fix this?

  1. Firewire is Firewire400 or IEEE1394a or i.LINK.

    USB is USB.

The communications protocols are very different. If you really jammed a firewire cable into the computer's USB slot or a miniUSB into the 4-pin DV port on the camcorder, you probably broke something.

Hoping you didn't and are actually using the USB port on the camcorder and the USB port on the computer, Windows MovieMaker will not recognize the camcorder without certain specific USB drivers that are most likely not supported.

    Since this http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Dell%20Inspi...

says there is an integrated IEEE1394a slot, you need to see if the slot is operational. Right click "My Computer" select Properties; Device Manager... the 1394 should be "normal" like all the others. If not, the driver needs to be installed. If OK, then be sure you are plugging into the firewire port (not USB) - check the logo near the port with the one on the wikipedia page, or it should be labelled 1394... The preferences in MovieMaker need to be set to select the firewire port.

Firewire connected devices do not need special individual drivers (like USB devices do). If the firewire port is working properly, then it "just works".
