  1. I think people just disagree with you because they like another name better so they give you a thumbs down. It's silly, I think only the person who asks the question should be able to give you a thumbs up or down.

  2. Who knows?

There was a woman who posted yesterday, wanting to know how she could cope with the grief of her grandchild being stillborn at 7 1/2 months, and people came along and gave thumbs down to all the people who were just offering their sympathies and trying to provide whatever comfort they could.  I personally received TWO thumbs down on that one, as did many other people.

But in the names section, I guess it's just people's way of showing that they agree or disagree with that person's choices.

(Then again, why do people ask questions and post replies in text speak, when they have a full keyboard at their disposal?)

  3. I notice some people when they answer a question, they go up a list and gives thumbs down

    I think that is dumb

You right it's dumb to give thumb down when people ask to pick two

Not everyone thinks the same, and that is a good thing

It's better giving tumb down when you do not agree with them, then they just answer the question before you

  4. I'd say its just a way to express not agreeing with your opinion. Happens all the time so don't take it too seriously.

  5. Lol yep. I don't know people are weird...

  6. Don't take it personally. I always get thumbs down, even when I put a lot of effort and thought into my answers. This is probably because naming is such a subjective thing, and people will thumbs down an answer if they disagree with the name you're proposing. It's not your answer, rather it's the names they disagree with and dislike.

I usually thumbs down if someone answers rudely or spams (e.g. telling the person to go to a dating site). I usually thumbs up if I think the person put a lot of effort into coming up with names - I know how hard it is to figure out names that flow. I also thumbs up if I agree with what the person is saying, or if the person answered the question in the same way I would (.e.g. if they picked the same names I like off of a name list).

I can see where you're coming from. People have different taste in names, and this shouldn't be discriminated against. I'm one of those people that dislikes certain names (e.g. Bertha, Naveah), but this comes down to a generational difference. Moreover, I've grown up in a generation where giving children surnames as first names is normal (e.g. Taylor, Tyler), and so unisex names, surnames-as-firstnames and boys names that have become girls names don't both me as much as they do some people. I actually like some surname names that are considered traditionally male, but only used for a girl (e.g. Avery).

  7. To show disagreement, and to indicate to the asker, that they should not follow this person's opinion.

What baffles me more than this, is when people give thumbs down to answers which link to other websites, where the asker can find what they are looking for. For example, if someone wants names that begin with a certain letter or have 3 syllables, etc and you post a link, somebody will thumb down that answer.

Same goes for telling someone to use Google instead of asking for name meanings here, or to find certain names.

Why give that a negative rating? I have to use Google too, to answer that question, so why can't the asker do this in the first place?

  8. Because the name in the list sucks!
