  1. I run K&N filters, and I like them.

There has been a small increase in MPG.

As for power, I was able to race another car of the same make and model as one that I have a K&N in. I beat him (but not by much).

So I think the filter helped.

  2. Depends on how you drive. If you drive like a grandma -- slow and not accelerating quickly, you'll have more gas mileage (about 2-3mpg more). If you like to "get up there and go", you'll be getting slightly more horsepower.

  3. yes.  2-3 mpg.  which means it takes about 3 months at current gas prices to pay for one.  that's similar to what you generally get in HP increase.  a little, but not noticeable.

  4. In my experience, they help gas mileage just a little bit, maybe 2-3 mpg at best. I have never noticed much power difference.

  5. The K&N won't supply more power, it will reduce the restriction on air entering your engine that you get with the standard air filter element.

By increasing the amount of air, the common theory is that your engine will automatically increase fuel accordingly (through the ECU) and this gives you the increase in performance.

The improved fuel consumption requires you to drive sensibly and completely forget any power increase benefits.  Over distances, you should see a noticeable increase in your fuel economy with a performance air filter fitted.

Remember that as a cotton-gauze filter, the K&N will need regular cleaning.  I would recommend increasing the service intervals to every 10,000 miles (I believe K&N state around 50,000!) as in my experience, the K&N does not perform well when subjected to high dirt load.  When kept clean it's a good filter.
