K&N air filter questions

Question

Do K&N air filters really increase the horsepower and give you better gas mileage? I'm dying to try one on my celica but being that there around $50 i am a bit skeptical. Any thoughts?

Just the K&N filter alone will not increase your horses. A K&N cold air kit however will give a boost in horsepower. For example, I have a '97 Mustang Cobra. Replacing the stock air cleaner with a K&N cold air kit netted me a 12 HP increase, and this was guaranteed by K&N.

it's like good running shoes on weak legs. the increase is porportional to the condition of the rest of your vehicle. if you have good spark plugs, plug wires, fuel system, and oil, and everything else then your performance may increase more. but if those factors aren't in shape, it might be like trying to run faster while dragging a sled.

$50 isn't very much for an air filter. Upgrading your air filter will increase the amount of axygen moving into your intake manifold increasing power, if you were going to spend money on a new filter I would pony up the cash and buy a cold air intake. I recommend this because it cools the air which gives it a higher density. This means that you can fit more volume of denser air into your combustion chamber, which will give you more power using the same amount of gas (Because oxygen accelerates the combustion process leading to a more potent combustion).

Yes and no. Its true that you get more intake but the increase in horsepower and gas mileage depend on the over all condition of your cars engine and your driving habits.

k&n filters last longer than standard filters so in the long run they  are not more expensive

I have a car with a smaller engine, and when I put the K&N filter in I didn't notice a lot of power gain, but a noticable improvment in acceleration and idle (my car has a carbuerator).

I reccomend it.
