Question:

K12, can someone please help me about the program?

I've heard k12 is the ebst home schooling program on the net, and I really want to look into it more. When I go to Get K12, and click on the Texas link, it takes me to this site for the state of Texas but the program only offers up to the 8th grade. I'm in the 9th.

Am I missing something? Am I clicking the wrong thing? Or is the k12 not really an option for me. I would appreciate it if anyone could help me. Thank you!

  1. go under schooling programs, then go to virtual public high schools.

  2. why would you want to have home schooling? then where will your child learn to interact with other children?

  3. TXVA is only for certain grades and counties.  If you want to use K12 as an independent, homeschooling student, you need to go to the "Consumer Direct" part of K12's site.  Don't click on the "in my state" link, use the "buy K12 products directly" link from the homepage.  It links you here:

    http://v7.k12.com/independence.html

As a 9th grader, you could do K12's high school program, which is $350/course/semester, or you could take some of the middle school courses, which are subscription based and have different costs for each course's materials.

You can click on the "pricing and ordering" link at the link above to see the costs.

It's too late to enroll in the high school courses for this semester, but you could start in the spring.

  4. k12 only goes up to 8th grade in certain states. I live in Georgia and that is how it is here. Next year they plan to add the upper grades here. You can probably call their help number and they can give you more info. Their staff is very knowledgeable.

  5. As far as I know, Texas doesn't use the K12 virtual program. New states are added every year though and I have been out of the loop this year, so maybe they have recently begun a virtual. I am in a neighboring state, Arkansas, that does have a K12 virtual. You can compare the two websites and see if it seems to be the same program or not. Arkansas' virtual is at http://www.arva.org/curriculum/ (Wow! It looks so different than last year's website). Arkansas doesn't go above 8th grade either; though the K12 curriculum itself does have a high school program. It is still in development though, so maybe many of the virtuals are holding back until it is fully in place.

We had one of our four home-educated children enrolled for 4 years (4th to 7th grade). This year the virtual legally changed hands from being a federally-funded program to being state-funded. That meant that everyone went back into the lottery proccess (350 seats vs more than 1,000 applicants). Since our son was so close to outgrowing the program with the 8th grade cutoff, we decided to move his status back to traditional homeschool and continue working on the formation of an online homeschool course co-op. Since it doesn't sound like a high school virtual will be a reality for you, if you would like information on what we are doing just e-mail me at armoorefam@centurytel.net.
