i have a few questions about k12, im in 8th grade right now,and Im thinking of doing it 9th grade.

Can i do k12 and teach myself with it or does my parent have to teach me? (my parents are in work so how would it work out?)

do i have to learn music&art&pe, or only core classes ?

I live in VA, and theres only one school to pick from, do i have to pick it, and its not my school so i just pick any school thats participating in it?

link; http://www.k12.com/curriculum_and_products/participating_schools_in_virginia/

and does the school i pick even matter? or does it just have to be in my state?

  1. There are three options for using K12 high school courses.  All are teacher-led.

*A K12 virtual public school in your state (free)

*K12's Icademy full time enrollment (private, tuition-based)

*K12's Icademy part time enrollment (no school benefits)

Here are the virtual *public* school options in VA:

Halifax is only K-8.  The Pittsylvania site is too "busy" for me to find, but at first glance, it looks as if it includes high school.

You would "teach yourself" to a point, but all the courses are teacher-led online.  You will have to follow the class schedule, just like a B&M school.  Your parents would be your mentors and coaches.

As for core vs. elective classes, that will depend on if you use a public school option, or if you use the private academy.  The public one may require art & music for graduation.  The private academy may or may not, depending on your state's graduation requirements.

As far as picking a K12 school, you can only attend if they have your grade level (Halifax does not) and if students in your school district are allowed to enroll.  Some virtual schools are only for the students in the sponsoring district.  Others are state-wide and any student in the state may enroll.

The Icademy is an international school.  You can live anywhere in the world.  The courses are $375/course/semester for non-AP and 0.5 credits, or full time enrollment is $4995/year ($4246 w/ current discount).

    Icademy enrollment:

K12 High School (same thing, just different page)

If you want to be an independent homeschooler, you can, and just do part-time enrollment in a K12 high school course.  It will still be teacher-led.  If you want/need some middle school courses for prerequisites, then the courses are less and are an an entirely different plan.

  2. I used K12 for, I think my eighth grade year, and I liked it, but it was a lot of work.

They had all the basic subjects- math, language, reading, etc.- and also extras, like music and art.  It's a lot like public school, only your in the comfort of your own home.

Now, I'm re-reading your question and I'm not sure I'm thinking of the same K12 program.  For the one I did, we ordered and payed for the cirriculums, had them sent to my house and then we did it all at home.  All the subjects were on CD's and you put them in the computer.  You can message me if you have any more questions.
