  1. Have you looked at Sonlight?

I was just looking at K12 and realized that if I got all of the programs for 4th grade that it would cost 1592.00 We spent just over 900.00 with Sonlight to start it and to buy stuff for my kindergartener. Core 3+4 runs about 650.00 plus you need the required materials.

  2. Are you set on K12? My boys used Sonlight for many years. The books are amazing and most kids really like it. They have a free catalog and an online catalog.

  3. You can buy the program from them even if they don't do it in your area, probably kina expensive though, but my daughter does this program in CA and she loves it. Good Luck!

  4. You can buy specific subjects through K12, but I would suggest you have a look through here first: http://homeschoolreviews.com/default.asp... You may well find other programs that would suit you better or be cheaper. If you think about it, you might even find your library to be perfectly useful and not need to buy curriculums for many subjects at all. Make friends with your local librarians! Have a look here too: http://www.amblesideonline.org/ It's free to follow, and most of their recommended texts are found free online.

How to persuade your mum? Well, you need to be able to answer all her questions and concerns. I can guess what they are, but you need to demonstrate your maturity by doing the research yourself.

  5. You can purchase K12 by individual subjects.

To be honest however, we used their materials for a few months and were not impressed.  There was a lot of workbook time, the content of which kids don't tend to retain.  The literature was pathetic, and the math and science programs were not much better.

  6. I've used K12 as an independer HS'er for 5.5 yrs for my son.  You didn't say what grade you were in, but for Kdg-8th it will run you around $1000 (not sure where someone got $1500+ - that would be without a sale and will all the materials - which you don't need - plus you can get materials used).

For 9th-12th, you have to use the iCademy, which for PT classes is $375/course/semester.  FT is around $7000.  It's a *private* online school.

If you use K12 (esp. for high school), your mom won't have to do much.  Starting in middle school the courses are self-directed.  For iCademy, you'll have an assigned teacher.

Oh, and as for Sonlight, it does *not* match my son's learning style, nor my teaching style.  K12's depth and breadth are *amazing*.  Also, if you don't want Christian materials, you wouldn't want to do Sonlight - it would take too much work to adapt it.  K12 is secular
