  1. those crafty russians will find a way...they wont ever be as big as the NHL though

  2. The league is being subsidized by some very wealthy Russian businessmen. These are guys who are far more interested in building a hockey empire than how much it will effect their personal fortunes. These are guys that could stand to lose 10's of millions for many years and not risk their personal empires. In Russia many programs are subsidized by either wealthy individuals or the government, the commercializm that is prevalent here just isnt that big a deal there, it is more a pride and show of financial strength than making money situation there. American sports are built on the premise of making big money, not so with many other countries.

  3. its not attendance that makes money, its tv contracts, which i dont know, europe doesnt really have an international station that will play hockey

  4. Most of the team owners are making a barrel of money in the Russian oil business.  They are in it for bragging rights not to make money.  With the deep pockets they have I can see them building new arenas.  Not sure if the population has the money to support a team but as long as the owners are willing to lose money it won't matter.

I don't see oil dropping anytime soon so money won't be an object for a while
