KIG thrashes Port Mayaca to clinch USPA National 20-Goal Tournament: 12-8
KIG slowly fended off all the bad omens and scored back to back goals as it outclassed Port Mayaca in the finals, clinching the title of the USPA (United States Polo Association) National Twenty-Goal Tournament, at the Grand Champions Polo Club, in Wellington,
Florida, United States.
While exhibiting wonderful shows during the six-chukka of play, KIG potted twelve goals against the eight of its counterparts, Port Mayaca.
KIG polo pro, Tommy Biddle, spoke with the media in quite a delightful mood and termed the victory a result of outstanding team effort. He observed, “It was just great teamwork. Hector Galindo was hot today and we just kept feeding the ball to him”.
Bash Kazi, the KIG skipper, expressed great joy after receiving the title of the tournament. He stated, “It was wonderful. This was a wonderful team and a great tournament,” he added.
Port Mayaca earned a handicap goal in the head of lower goals. J. J. Celis built up on the same lead, making it two-nil in the very beginning minutes of the match. The two-goal difference ignited the KIG attackers, who started playing aggressively.
In a matter of a few minutes, Tommy Biddle accounted for two goals while his teammate, Hector Galindo, joined him with a penalty conversion. The first set of play concluded with KIG sitting ahead of Port Mayaca by 3-2.
The second frame was the most hard-hitting period but with no goals. Many attacks were accomplished by the two sides but either they were tackled or they went wide.
Port Mayaca was trailing by a single goal, 3-2, after seven and a half minutes of the scoreless game.
In the third frame, Galindo showed dazzling performances, scoring two back to back goals. One of these two was scored on a penalty shot, while the other from the field. Stevie Orthwein countered with a single goal, reducing the difference to two. KIG was
holding a two-goal edge, 5-3, at halftime.
The fourth set of play was quite fruitful where the duo registered consecutive goals, taking the score to 8-5, with two chukkas left to fight.
It was Jeff Blake who ruined the defence-line of Port Mayaca, scoring all three goals in the chukka for KIG.
A couple of goals from Luis Escobar kept Port Mayaca’s hopes alive to make a comeback into the match.
In an outstanding move, Port Mayaca bounced back by scoring two consecutive goals. One goal each from Misha Rodzianko and Orthwein decreased the gap to a single point. But Galindo and Biddle nailed in one notch apiece, regaining a three-goal, 10-7 edge for
KIG.
Galindo added two more in the final period against the single goal by Celis, sealing the victory and earning the title for KIG by 12-8. The victory will surely boost the morale of KIG players in the future tournaments.
