  1. Yes, canned food is soft food. Well for a kitten, I would suggest giving it canned food like this : http://us.iams.com/iams/en_US/jsp/IAMS_P...

It's Iams kitten food. (Canned)  Get the 3 oz. then give half of it for lunch to the kitten. The other half for dinner.

Leave some dry food out like this: http://us.iams.com/iams/en_US/jsp/IAMS_P...

It's Iams too but its dry. Put some in his bowl. Your kitten could eat it whenever the kitten's hungry.

If you want try giving it some cat milk like this :http://www.whiskas.com/meal_time/snack_f...

You can all buy all of those at Petsmart.

  2. Soft food is best for kittens  when they are young...either moist or dry food softened with water, milk or low sodium chicken broth.

as far as home made cat food you can serve boiled chicken mashed with brown rice but you'll have to buy vitamin supplements  to add to the food...the website below will be able to give more in depth info about homemade food

  3. yes can food is soft food. it is better for them if they are a kitten not a cat. make sure that it says for kitten on can because it has different nutrients in it. you can switch it out every day like that it all depends on the cats age and taste preference. slowly start mixing hard food with soft food it will make it easier for the cat to chew because it has baby teeth. there are some home made foods but i dont know any recipes but i wouldnt do alot of home treats use them as treats. milk is good for kittens but don't give to much to adult cats every day or you will make them sick. hope you have fun with your kitten and hope i helped. remember to give the kitten lots of exercise.

  4. My kittens have whiskas which is soft food from a tin 4 timed a day, if I'm going out will leave biscuits out, u cant leave the wet food down 2 long otherwise it goes yuk! I don't make homemade food just if cooking roast chicken i give them a bit of that now and again, or a little bit of ham and tuna for a treat. All that the nutrients a kitten needs should be provided in the kitten food

  5. I have posted two links about cat food needs, from the Cornell Vet school.  They do not obviously suggest a specific brand, just what to look for.

Most dry kitten kibble are small chunks, and often cats more inhale than eat anyway.  In many ways, your kitten will decide its own preference, and that includes what foods they will eat and not eat.

I tend to look at meat for the first ingredient in cat foods, and stick with quality brand names.  In many ways, you do get what you pay for, but you can also overpay for the hype and advertising.

Dry food with a good source of water will be more than sufficient, but there is nothing wrong with feeding canned food.  It is just that you cannot leave it out for more than a hour or so, as it will spoil.

As far as a homemade diet, that is extremely demanding and difficult, as there are trace ingredients that your kitten must have.  And bacterial contamination is always a concern.

But I would more guess you are wondering about treats.  Boiled boneless chicken is all right, but beware of giving human food, as you can turn your cat into a table beggar, and run the risk of obesity.

But a little bit of treats is a nice way to bond with your kitten, so a little bit once in awhile is all right.  A tiny piece of cheese is often liked.  (Even though your kitten will be lactose intolerant, the amount given is not enough to be a worry).

I would stay away from those packaged treats;  they are expensive and high calorie and really just junk food your cat doesn't need.

  6. Wet or Soft food vs Dry food - it's been debated here forever.  It depends on what your vet tells you is best for your particular kitten.  Some people say only feed wet food to cats because of the fluid intake (as long as you have fresh water nearby, and the cat is deemed healthy - I don't think that reason...um...holds water). Some people would say feeding an all dry food diet causes health issues like diabetes.  Personally, I have four cats - they have all been weaned off wet food (though I give them a very small amount of tuna once or twice a week) and I only give them dry.

Don't make homemade food, it will not have the balance of nutrients or protein they may need to live healthy.  Unless you are a vet dietician, it would be very unwise, not to mention messy-expensive-and time consuming.

Talk to your vet.  This is a decision only you and the vet can make.  Stay away from getting answers from the internet - anyone can say anything here - right or wrong.  Talk to your vet (I can't say it enough)

  7. I have owned cats all my life can't live without at least one. All your kitten needs is half a can of wet food at night or in morning thats if you get the smaller cans if you go for the big cans then only give about 1/4 of the can a day and leave out the dry food and water all day all night. if you give your cat to much wet food (soft) you can make him sick with an upset tummy or give it the hershy squrts. trust me you don't want that ewwww. lol it is not a must to feed your kitten soft or wet food. if he has a hard time still being a kitten and all with the dry food add a little water to soften it up for him.
