KLM Open first round delayed due to course flooding – Golf news
After a late start to the 92nd KLM Open at the Hilversumsche Golf Club in Netherlands due to overnight vandalism which damaged no fewer than four greens, play has been further suspended due to severe course flooding. The scenic course has been
battering severe rains over few weeks which had been a cause of concern for the management of the course who have been preparing for the tournament for the whole season.
Some of the high greens and putting surfaces were damaged by miscreants in the night and the course staff had to struggle to repair the damages at the last moment.
Englishmen, Simon Dyson and Robert Dinwiddie seems to have gained an early lead of the first round, after opening up with impressive putting on a rain-softened course. Dinwiddie, who started off from back nine, pulled in four birdies before making the turn
and clinched the top slot right from the beginning.
The front nine, his back nine, turned out to be tad less impressive where the Englishman fell for bogeys at par-four, 3rd and par-four, 6th and made up the loss with two more birdies to finish off for four-under, 66, on a par-70, 6,906
yard course.
Dyson opened up with a glistering birdie at par-five, 12th and closed his back nine with four more birdies, dropping just one shot. He made the turn to drop another shot at par-four, 4th and has still to tee-off for three more holes
before closing his first round. He is sharing the lead with Dinwiddie for the moment with four-under, 66.
Only five players so far, have been able to finish their first 18 holes including Robert Coles, Frenchman Victor Dubuisson, Seve Benson and Chilean Mark Tullo besides Dinwiddie. Play is likely to continue tomorrow before the start of second round proceedings.
Defending champion and World Number Three, Martin Kaymer had a disappointing day so far and stumbled on four bogeys in his 14-hole stretch. Starting off from back nine, Kaymer played defensively to avoid bogeys and made the turn to card his lone birdie so
far at the second. World Number Two, Lee Westwood was scheduled to tee-off at 13.30, local time and will probably start his first 18 holes tomorrow.
