KNITTNG--Why do some patterns say: knit with 2 strands at same time (same color)? Why not just a thicker yarn

Wouldn't a thicker yarn do the trick?

  1. there are some kinds of yarn that only come in certain weights.

    another reason is that maybe when this person was making this project, he or she only had that one weight and needed a thicker yarn that they didnt have available for them to buy or the only kind of yarn that they hade in their stash.

    you can use a thicker yarn, just make sure that you can get the recommended gauge.


  2. Maybe that particular color and fiber isn't available in a thicker yarn.  Most patterns site a particular brand of yarn, but you can use a different yarn/fiber/size as long as the stitches per inch is the same

  3. it doesn't matter what thickness of yarn you use ... you want to match the gauge of the pattern ...

    if you can match the gauge using a thicker yarn instead of two strands ... then do it!
