http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ola-Toivonen-c28363, Dries Mertens and Jeremain Lens fired Phillip Cocu’s side to Dutch cup glory and their first piece of silverware since 2008 at the expense of Peter Bosz’s men.
On Sunday, April 8, PSV Eindhoven registered a convincing 3-0 win over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Heracles-Almelo-c39520 in the final of KNVB beker Cup at De Kuip Stadion to lift their first piece of silverware since 2008.
It was a complete mismatch on paper, as former European champions and 21-time Dutch champions were against a side, whose last Dutch top tier success came way back in the summer of 1941.
The Heraclieden were brimming with confidence of achieving a good result as they were heading into the final with a stunning 4-2 win over Eredivisie title hopefuls, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AZ-c38571 Alkmaar, in the semi-final. However, they failed to assert
their authority at any stage of the clash and remained the second best side on the field.
PSV dominated proceedings in front of a packed stadium right from the first whistle and put immense pressure on the Almelo outfit throughout the 90 minutes, which was wildly expected given the club’s stature.
In the second minute, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jeremain-Lens-c18323’ effort from the edge of the box went inches wide of the target. Ola Toivonen then missed the target in the 14th minute, as the Almelo outfit continued to live dangerously.
Moments later, the Boeren glovesman, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Przemyslaw-Tyton-c30175, made an impressive diving save to fingertip Willy Overtoom’s long range effort for a corner, which failed to create anything of note.
The Heraclieden goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dries-Mertens-c11679 from hitting the back of the net in the 19th minute.
Lens played a neat low pass for the Belgian ace from the right flank. The pint-sized winger tried to round the advancing Pasveer after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Racing-c40298 inside the box, but failed to control the ball, and the chance went begging.
However, the Boeren did manage to break the deadlock in the 31st minute through Toivonen. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/PSV-c40281 captain coolly back-heeled the ball past the helpless Pasveer
to make it 1-0.
Six minutes into the second-half, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Georginio-Wijnaldum-c14629 had a perfect opportunity to double his side’s advantage. However, the midfielder somehow failed to hit the target from close range, much to the dismay of the PSV boss Phillip
Cocu.
The miss, however, did not prove costly, as the Boeren doubled their advantage in the 56th minute. Erik Pieters’ long ball for a quick counter attack found Mertens upfront, whose perfectly timed header found the back
of the net.
Three minutes later, the Belgian ace came close to doubling his tally, but Pasveer, who certainly proved to be his side’s best performer of the evening, came to rescue the Heraclieden yet again with a good save.
Nonetheless, the Heraclieden goalkeeper was left helpless in the 63rd minute when Lens chipped over him to put the match to bed. The powerful forward outsmarted Ben Rienstra to win the ball and coolly finished to make
the score-line 3-0.
Tyton made a tremendous diving save to deny the Heraclieden scoring a consolation goal late in the game as the Brazilian glovesman tipped away Everton’s volley.
PSV emerged victorious at the end in a convincing manner and lifted their first piece of silverware since their 2007/08 Eredivisie triumph.
