KPS Gill lashes out at Hockey India for paying higher fee than the deal for 2010 World Cup
Kanwar Pal Singh (KPS) Gill, the former chief of the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), lashed out at Hockey India (HI) claiming that it paid a much higher fee than the original deal for hosting the 2010 World Cup held in New Delhi.
Speaking to the media, the former IHF chief criticised Hockey India saying that the World Cup was not organised by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) or HI but the ‘Organising Committee of the Hero Honda FIH World Cup Society’.
KPS Gill, who served the head of the IHF stated, “The World Cup was hosted by a different body altogether, formed just before the start of the tournament. No one knows what has happened to that body now. It was a private body and was not under the purview
of the Right to Information. How can a private body run the World Cup?”
According to KPS Gill's allegations, the national governing body paid millions of rupees extra as what was written in the agreement to hold the FIH event. Addressing the media personnel along with R K Shetty, the President of the Indian Hockey Federation
(IHF), the former police officer said that he would file a case against the embezzlement with the national exchequer. The matter about the usage of PKR 75 million should be probed, as in which way the amount was transferred to the world governing body.
According to his information, these facts were stated by Narinder Batra, the Secretary General of Hockey India, during a meeting which was held by the Sports Ministry of India in a bid to make a settlement between the disputing Indian Hockey Federation (IHF)
and the Hockey India (HI). According to his information, the ‘Organising Committee of the Hero Honda FIH World Cup Society’ was headed by Suresh Kalmadi, who was also head of the IOA.
KPS Gill in clear words stated that they made an agreement with the FIH to conduct the World Cup 2010 with the total worth of INR 45 million. However, the committee paid more than the agreed amount. To a query regarding controversies between HI and IHF,
he opined that the differences could be resolved within a day.
Sitting beside the President of the IHF, he stated that many issues between the quarrelling bodies have been sorted out. However, the HI Secretary General was not ready to dispose the matter.
RK Shetty on the occasion spoke to the media informing that many issues between the IHF and HI had been sorted out after the verdict of the Delhi High Court. It is pertinent to mention here that the court has permitted the IHF to host the WSH (World Hockey
Series).
The IHF President maintained that they would not bar any player from taking part in any national or international event ever, even if it was held under the sponsorship of Hockey India.
