KPS Gill says Kalmadi’s arrest first step towards the rejuvenation of Indian Hockey
Kanwar Pal Singh (KPS) Gill, the former president of the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), in strong words seconded the arrestment of Suresh Kalmadi saying that it would be first step on the way to revive the past glory of sports in India.
Applauding the act of Indian investigative agencies, the former IHF President and the two-time Director General Punjab Police said that those officials apprehended Kalmadi were deserved lot of praise.
It is vital to mention here that Suresh Kalmadi, a suspended Congress MP and former Chief of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, was apprehended on Monday on fraud and corruption charges. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) held the former
Chief who was found allegedly involved in financial embezzlement during the Commonwealth Games held last year in India.
Kalmadi in an ironic way had kicked out KPS Gill on corruption charges from the post of IHF chief some three years ago, who had been serving at the post for last one and half decade. KPS Gill while speaking to the media said that Kalmadi had no right
to dissolve the federation and sack him. He stated, “I maintained back then that there was more than what met the eye in my sacking and the subsequent dissolving of the IHF. Kalmadi did not have the right intentions then and look what has happened to him today.”
There were countless financial misuses revealed in every audit report of the national games held in the reign of Suresh Kalmadi, he added. Gill further stated that Kalmadi was the real culprit behind the sports decline in the country.
Explaining the situation, KPS Gill was of the opinion that Lalit Bhanot, the right hand of Kalmadi, was mainly responsible behind the appalling state of athletic sports. It is pertinent to mention here that Lalit Bhanot has also been held by the CBI
under same corruption charges in the Commonwealth Games. He feared that no single athlete would be able to get a spot in the upcoming 2012 London Olympics owing to miserable state of hockey in the country.
In his views, all administration of the sport bodies needs a complete revamp to resurrect the past glory of the sports in India. He stated, “The entire sports administration needs an overhaul. However, Kalmadi's ouster is the first step in this regard.”
In a blasting way, the former cop asked the former Sports Minister, MS Gill, to accept the moral responsibility of the financial embezzlement and seek forgiveness, as everything was done by Kalmadi in his era. He also seeks resignation from Randhir
Singh, the Secretary of the Indian Olympic Association. He was of the opinion that Randhir was sitting on the crucial post like a spectator for the last several years and that he should quit elegantly.
