KP’s Bannu Hockey Stadium is in a complete mess: Hockey Update
One of the most promising hockey stadiums in Pakistan with a purpose to conduct international level events, The Bannu Hockey Stadium in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is in shambles.
This stadium was built under the name of one of Pakistan’s greatest hockey legends, Late Qazi Muhibur-Rehman.
After a complete inspection of the stadium’s premises, it could be seen that not just the synthetic turf, Astroturf, had been completely destroyed, but also the walls and the marquee are in a very terrible condition.
Talking about the loss of a synthetic field being neglected this way, it was a heavy investment of about PKR 10.36 million that was made to lay an Astroturf in the stadium.
The work of getting it carpeted at the venue took about four years, starting from 1996 to 2000, when it was finally completed. On the other hand, it only took six months to be worn out and wasted with large holes and cracked surface. Moreover, the laying process was also not properly done because there was soil reappearing over the surface that reflected the fact that the required type of digging was not done.
This stadium was intended to provide all sorts of international-level facilities to the hockey players in order to prepare themselves for the World’s top class hockey events. However, the poor condition was quite visible and it was clearly understood that sub-standard material was used for the construction of the stadium.
The stadium depicts, as if it has never been used for the purpose it was built for and was infested due to water-logging and dust.
Because of the sewerage issues prevailing in the locality that contained establishments of Officers Club, Regal Cinema and Basketball Ground, the stadium usually remains filled with the dirty water.
Moreover, it is apparent that the stadium has not been maintained on a regular basis because the boundary walls are also apparently damaged and need repairing.
Even though the stadium’s premises had been previously renovated a number of times, it still needs a lot of attention and effort to be put back to use again.
