KP’s retirement decision staggering says Michael Vaughan – Cricket News Roundup – Part 1 – June 9, 2012
Former England captain, Michael Vaughan, has described Kevin Pietersen’s retirement from all formats of one-day cricket as staggering.
Pietersen recently made himself unavailable for the national team’s ODI and T20 bouts, stating that his decision will help the management in preparing youngsters for the 2015 World Cup. His decision however, came as a shock to many, including Vaughan, who feels that the timing is inappropriate considering the Poms are due to defend their World T20 title in September.
"For Kevin Pietersen to suddenly drop that in, in the summer, with the World Twenty20 just three months away, I find staggering," Vaughan told BBC Sport.
South African ODI and T20 skipper, AB de Villiers, wants his side to prove their mettle when they take on England in the highly anticipated series of the year.
The Proteas will travel to Europe in July, locking horns with the English contingent in three Tests, along with five-ODIs and three T20s. In 2008, the team’s last tour on English soil, SA emerged winners in the Test arena before being whitewashed in the ODI series.
De Villiers said that he wants his side to give their best and come out winners in all formats. "That was the big negative from that tour (in 2008), that we relaxed after the test series win. But I won't allow the boys to relax,” he said.
Windies’ legendary fast bowler, Michael Holding, believes that veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul should play on for at least another two years.
Chanderpaul is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in Test cricket, having amassed more than 10000 Test runs. He currently sits at the top of the ICC’s Test batsman ranking and has been the team’s mainstay over the past couple of years.
He has been in solid form recently, scoring scores as 87 and 91 during the ongoing Test series against England. “I think Shivnarine has at least another two years in him," Holding told Sky Sports."He has not lost his abilities to score runs; he might not be the most attractive batsman in the world but he knows how to get his job done.”
