Kai-Chen Chang dumps Olga Govortsova in the quarter-finals – OEC Taipei WTA Ladies Open 2012
A stunning performance from the local underdog contestant, Kai-Chen Chang, completely dismantled the hot favourite second seeded Belarusian contender, Olga Govortsova, in the quarter-final round of OEC Taipei WTA Ladies Open on Friday. It was a totally one-sided encounter, with the fifth seed Taiwanese penning down an authoritative straight-sets victory at 6-0, 6-2, taking merely 63 minutes of play.
It was expected that these two seeded opponents will give some real tough time to one another but Govortsova proved to be easy bait for the Taiwanese winner. She has won her initial two matches of the tournament comprehensively but couldn’t do anything at all to evade the all-round onslaught from Chang. The 24-year-old Belarusian pocketed merely two games in the entire matchup, while suffering a bagel opening set and crashed out of the WTA event in a disappointing fashion.
These two players faced each other last year at Nottingham and Govortsova came out as the winner in twin sets, 6-4, 6-4. It was the payback time for Chang, who has been in a decent form during the past few months. The fifth seeded Taiwanese contender took no time to get under the skin of her 54th ranked opponent and was off to a flyer in the opening set, igniting a series of serve breaks to create early pressure on her opponent. She was absolutely unstoppable in the opener and just rocketed away to 6-0 in no time.
The following set didn’t bring much luck for Govortsova, as she kept struggling to find her rhythm and carried on her error-ridden game play. She had two vital break opportunities in the second set but couldn’t convert either of them to remain on the back foot. On the other hand, Chang kept belting aggressive winners to continue her voyage to victory. She won 15 out of 20 first serve points and broke the Belarusian serve two out of three times to conclude the matchup at 6-2. A total of 81 points were played in the contest, with Chang impressively winning 55 and her opponent lagging far behind with just 26 points to finish on the losing side in the end.
