Kai Glennie secures Men 100m backstroke gold: Day one – 2012 NSW Metropolitan Championships
Kai Glennie of RYDE secured gold medal of the Long Course 100m backstroke swim in Men 14 Year Olds age group on day one of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) Metropolitan Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Saturday, March 3.
The NSW meet is a two-day competition, allowing the national age group stars to compete with each other in their main events and prove their eligibility for gold medal.
Glennie faced a hard time in proving supremacy over his challenger, but with his unrelenting efforts, he emerged on the victory stand for the title.
Dylan Betham of RIPL transpired as the top contender for gold medal as he ended his first lap in a time of 30.55 seconds. He was followed by his team-member, Cameron Slaughter, who ended his initial lap of the race in a second fastest time of 30.67 seconds.
He was trailed by Glennie, who remained 0.38 seconds slower and covered the equivalent distance with an effort of 31.05 seconds while Matt Kelly of ABBT clocked a fourth fastest time of 31.67 seconds.
Subsequently, the crowd witnessed a significant improvement in Glennie’s pace, who went full throttle in the final round and astonished the crowd by accomplishing gold medal with an effort of 1 minute and 04.30 seconds.
With his scintillating effort, he remained almost five seconds slower from the record of 59.88 seconds, set by Matthew Georgevits of CARL in 2010.
In the meantime, Slaughter spoiled the party of his strongest competitors as he completed his race in a time of 1 minute and 04.51 seconds for silver medal. He was chased by Kelly, who stayed 0.24 seconds above and tapped the finishing end with an effort
of 1 minute and 04.75 seconds for bronze medal.
Betham, who was the fastest in first lap, failed to sustain his position in the second half and settled on the finishing wall for fourth position by producing a time of 1 minute and 04.80 seconds.
In addition, the session ended after the completion of all scheduled events whereas the podium finishers were invited on the medal rostrum for awards and accolades after the session.
