Kaia Kanepi - A recap of her performances this season
Born on 10th June, 1985, in the city of Haapsalu, Kaia Kanepi is a professional tennis player from Estonia. She achieved her highest ranking of world number 18 back in 2009 during the month of May. Kaia is currently ranked number thirty two in the world by WTA.
As far as her 2010 performances are concerned, Kaia captured her first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour trophy in Palermo and registered her name as the first tennis player from Estonia to do so. She next participated in the ASB Classic tennis competition as her second contest of the season. The twenty five year old, Kanepi made her way into the second round of the tournament after getting the better of Li Na in straight sets. In the next round, the Estonian however, was knocked down by Maria Kirilenko in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6–2, 6–3.
At the 2010 Moorilla Hobart International, Kanepi was taken down in her opening round match by the seventh seeded Zheng Jie in a three setter clash. The final match score was 4–6, 6–3, 7–6(4).
The Haapsalu resident, next contested at the 2010 Australian Open tennis championship where she dismissed Chan Yung Jan in the first round match. She was then kicked out of the competition by the nineteen seeded Nadia Petrova in the second round of the year’s first major event. The final match score was 6–4, 6–4.
Kaia was seeded number five at the Cellular South Cup, held in Memphis. She was in the same draw along with the Russian tennis sensation, Maria Sharapova. She thrashed out Arantxa Rus in a total of two sets in the first round and former world number seven, Nicole Vaidisova in a three setter clash in the next round. Kanepi, however was hammered down in the quarter final round of the competition by Petra Kvitova with a final match score of 1–6, 6–3, 7–6(0). Despite her quarter final run, her world rankings fell to as low as number ninety six as a result of not defending her points from Dubai back in 2009.
At the French Open tennis tournament 2010, the professional tennis contender, Kaia Kanepi toppled Pauline Parmentier in the opening round match in straight sets. She pushed the fourth ranked Jelena Jankovic to a total of three sets before falling down in the second round of the tournament. The final match score was 6–2, 3–6, 6–4. However, as a result of her French Open appearance, Kanepi once again improved her rankings to top hundred in the world.
After successfully qualifying for the grass court Grand Slam tournament, Kaia upset the world number six, Samantha Stosur in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6–4, 6–4. She then managed to knock down Edina Gallovits in the second round of the competition and the world number thirty one Alexandra Dulgheru in the third one. Kaia as a result made her way into the quarter final round of a Grand Slam tournament on the second occasion in her career after beating Klara Zakopalova in a total of two sets in the round four at the All England Club. The final match score was 6–2, 6–4. In the quarters, the Estonian was dismissed after a three tough sets by Petra Kvitova. The final match score was 4–6, 7–6(8), 8–6. As a result of her excellent performance at Wimbledon, Kanepi's ranking rose to as high as number 38 in the world.
She next competed at the 2010 Swedish Open tennis tournament where she was defeated in the first round by the fifth seeded Arantxa Parra Santonja in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6–4, 7–5.
As far as the ongoing United States Open tennis tournament 2010 is concerned, Kaia Kanepi is seeded number thirty one to win the title in New York. She has dismissed Jelena Jankovic, Alize Cornet, Yanina Wickmayer as well as Akgul Amanmuradova to make her way into the quarter final round of the competition, where she will take on the seventh seeded Vera Zvonareva.
