Kaia Kanepi and Karolina Pliskova reach round two at BNP Paribas Katowice Open 2013 – Tennis News
World number 37, Kaia Kanepi, dismissed the 218th ranked Pole, Sandra Zaniewska, in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Katowice Open on Tuesday. It was her comeback performance. She spent the time at the sidelines
suffering from an injury and didn’t take part in any of the tournament after the Tokyo Open which was contested in September 2011. Kanepi dumped the 21-year-old local with straight sets 6-1, 6-1 quick fire.
Kanepi told the reporter in the post-match interview at the court, “I was a bit nervous at the beginning but it wasn't too bad. It felt good to play again. My mistakes didn't bother me as much as they would have when I was in top
form. I just went easy on myself out there and I'm looking forward to my next match here in Katowice.”
A confident start for the Estonian superstar helped her to break her rival’s serve in the opening game but she couldn’t capitalise on the opportunity. The local fought back to break serve but her inconsistent serving forced her
to drown to a trail once again by the end of the third game.
Kanepi didn’t look back from that stage and fired a barrage of winners to all corners of the court and gobbled up a couple of more breakpoints which were coupled with a serve hold brace. The opening set ended in a quick succession
leaving the Pole professional trailing.
The second set didn’t change anything for the 21-year-old Pole. She lost the breakpoint in the second game that drowned her to a trial of 0-3. She got off the mark in the fourth game but couldn’t handle the pressure of the onslaught
launched by the sixth seed Estonian. Kanepi won another breakthrough in the sixth game and rounded off the comeback clash with a speed of light.
Earlier in the day, the 81st ranked Czech beauty starlet, Karolina Pliskova, handed a tough loss to the Spanish professional, Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, to book a date with the sixth seed Estonian, Kaia Kanepi, in the
second round of the Red clay court tournament at Katowice.
The Czech star has been in a decent run of form lately. She is expected to test the likes of the sixth seed Estonian who is making a comeback and won’t feel the same comfort level especially in the first tournament.
