Kaia Kanepi flabbergasts top seed Caroline Wozniacki in 3rd round – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011
Top seed Caroline Wozniacki was flabbergasted when world number 43 Kaia Kanepi outwitted her in the third round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011. Duelling on outdoor hard courts for only two and twenty three minutes the unseeded
Estonian Kanepi stuck it out to reel off a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 victory against the world number one Wozniacki on 28th of September 2011.
Wozniacki opened the first round of the match, after winning the service toss and the two players won on alternate games to round off the score at 1-1. Wozniacki then held serve and broke Kanepi in the fourth game to lead with
a mini break at 3-1.
Following in the footsteps of the world number one, Kanepi broke back in the very next game and by holding her serve she managed to even the score at 3-3. The score then progressed on even terms at 4-4 then at 5-5. Eventually in
the eleventh game Wozniacki’s backhand went wayward hitting the net and she double faulted endorsing a game to Kanepi.
As Kanepi served for the opening game Wozniacki prayed for a double fault or an opportunity to bring the opening set to a tiebreaker, however, none of her wishes came true and instead, the players duelled a couple of aces until
finally Kanepi was able to win the opening set by smashing two successive aces.
During the second set, Wozniacki again opted to serve first and she capitalized on two break points; one in the second game and the other in the sixth game to square of a quick breadstick victory against the unseeded Estonian.
Serving for the decisive set was Kanepi but Wozniacki was not going to let her opponent win the set that easily and broke her adversary in the first game and by holding her own she capitalized on a mini break leading 2-0 and then
with a 3-0 by breaking Kanepi in the third game.
By the fourth game Kanepi made a comeback by breaking the top seed and then went on to holding her serve to reduce the deficit to 2-3. During the following two games the players held serve but by the end of the eighth game the
score again had tied at 4-4 as Kanepi broke Wozniacki.
Amidst the last two games Kanepi went on to holding her serve and then breaking her opponent for the last time in the tenth game as she put the world number one to shame and secured a place in the quarterfinal of the event.
