Kaia Kanepi ousts Coco Vandeweghe in second round – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011
Estonian Kaia Kanepi ousted American underdog Coco Vandeweghe in the second round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011. After duelling for just one hour and thirteen minutes on outdoor hard courts of the Ariake Colosseum, Tokyo,
Japan, the Estonian brass knocked out the American teenager, winning 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday the 27th of September.
Opening the first round of the match was Coco because she had just won the service toss, and she not only held her serve but also capitalized on an early in the second game to reel off a 2-0 score. However, Kanepi was right behind
her heels and also broke back in the very next game and levelled the score at 2-2 after holding her serve.
During the fifth game Coco was again broken by Kanepi, as she had tried to smash a crosscourt back hand but it went long and she lost a game, endorsing a game to Kanepi instead. As Kanepi held serve in the sixth game, she was now
leading with a break point and a game.
By the end of the sixth game the Estonian had used her favourite technique of serve break serve, and as she broke her adversary in the seventh game by smashing two successive aces at 30-love and further increased the gap between
each other to 5-2. After duelling three deuces she finally got the advantage to smash two successive aces and reel of a 6-2 opening set victory.
Serving second was again Coco, who was able to expertly hold her serve in the first game and by the second Kanepi was right with her on the score board at 1-1. In the following two games the challengers broke each other back to
back and balanced the score at 2-2.
Amidst the fifth, sixth and seventh game the Estonian Kanepi pulled another trick out of the bag employing the break serve break technique. The unseeded Estonian used this technique and was now only a game away from her victory.
As she served for the last game, she smashed an ace at 40-30 and secured a place in the third round of the Toray Pan Pacific 2011.
