Kaia Kanepi outfoxes Vania King to enter quarters – Estoril Open 2012
Sixth seed, Kaia Kanepi, breezed past the American contender, Vania King, in straight sets at the Estoril Open 2012 on Wednesday. She joggled up a 6-3, 6-4 success against the 23-year-old to progress into the quarter-finals at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association)
International-level tournament held in Estoril, Portugal.
The Estonian number one showed her true colours at this clay court event and dumped King in one hour and 53 minutes. The players last battled each other at the Rome WTA event three years ago and after pocketing this match, Kanepi improved to a 2-0 lifetime
in the head-to-head series against the American.
Kanepi stormed into the Estoril Court Central and went on a five-game killing spree before the American could hold on. Despite losing her edge in the seventh game, the Estonian kept her serve once more and sacked the opener by winning six games to three.
The 26-year-old lost her track in the proceeding set and suffered the first blow in the sixth game to go 2-4 down. However, she made a spectacular comeback and stroke out the last four games in a row, ultimately winning the set with a 6-4 score line.
Summing up the world number 34 performance, Kanepi warded off four out of six breakpoints she came across and cashed in four out of 10 break chances to earn the glory. She spilled seven double faults but impressively marked 29 out of 41 points on her first
serve share.
Up next for Kanepi is the fourth seed, Petra Cetkovska of Czech Republic, who crushed the British qualifier, Heather Watson, with a breadstick to set-up this outing. She lost her serve once but cashed in five out of 17 break opportunities to formulate a
6-3, 6-1 success in almost one and a half hour-long battle.
The top seed, Roberta Vinci, devastated the local wild card entrant, Maria Joao Koehler, with a bagel to join Kanepi in the final eight. She jolted down a 6-2, 6-0 success against the 19-year-old in just under an hour. The Italian seed smashed four ferocious
aces and converted five out of eight break chances to her advantage, consequently progressing at this event with conviction.
Vinci clobbered an equal first serve share of 58 per cent but superbly clicked 28 out of 37 points on it to rule the match.
The high flying Italian will next face the seventh seed, Nadia Petrova of Russia, in the last eight at this event.
